Newcastle targets Koumas

Tranmere midfielder Jason Koumas has attracted Newcastle United.

A Newcastle scout observed Koumas in Tranmere's match against Carlisle in the second round of the FA Cup. The 21-year old scored a hat-trick before halftime, with the first two hitting the back of the net in a space of 1 minute.

But Tranmere might be unwilling to let go of their prized asset. They have twice rejected official offers from West Bromwich Albion for the 21-year-old midfielder, including a £2.5million payas-he-plays deal last month.

Tranmere manager Dave Watson wants to hang on to his prize asset for as long as possible, but accepts performances such as this will increase Koumas' marketability.

Watson said: 'We have told Jason to concentrate on playing his football and that what will be will be. There's talk about him moving on, but it doesn't appear to be interfering with his game.'

Carlisle captain Dave Rogers said in awe: "He needs to be in the Premiership. He's got everything it takes to be at the top. He was different class in the first half."
