The Magpies
made yet another brilliant comeback at St. James Park yesterday, as they
trounced Leeds United 3-1. Leeds took an early lead just 24 seconds after the kick-off. A clever header from Australian striker Mark Viduka saw the ball sailing over the home defence's heads. Fellow striker Alan Smith then immediately pounced onto the ball and drove a low ball past goalkeeper Shay Given. His goal is the fastest in the Premiership this season. But Newcastle retaliated with a dozen chances, but the Leeds defence held firm. Then in the 42th minute, a dangerous cross in from Craig Bellamy was deflected off the defender Michael Duberry, and past his fellow goalkeeper Nigel Martyn into the back of his own net. Newcastle started to dominate for most of the second half. They then took the lead in the 60th minute. A cross from the right flank by Nolberto Solano found Bellamy, who chested it down for Kieron Dyer. Dyer then latched onto the ball, and struck a low shot left-footed past Martyn. The uphill task Leeds was facing was made even harder 10 minutes later, when Danny Mills was sent off for kicking out at Bellamy's shin. Newcastle finally sealed all 3 points in the 86th minute, when Dyer passed a brilliant through ball to Bellamy, who used his famed speed to outpace the Leeds defense, and putting a shot past Martyn. Yet another exciting encounter between Newcastle and Leeds, with 8 yellow cards and 1 red flashed. Yet another brilliant show of determination by Newcastle. |
